Feasibility study and turnkey contract for Arbaflame pellets

Siteconcept conducted a feasibility study for Arbaflame pellets at their facility in Matrand, approximately 15 kilometers west of Oslo. The study was carried out by Siteconcept’s Norwegian subsidiary. The facility in Matrand has served as a pilot plant for a new type of pellets, black pellets Arbacore. Now, the facility needed to be upgraded to produce 65,000 tons of pellets per year for commercial production. The feasibility study resulted in a turnkey contract.
Arbaflame produces black pellets that replace coal
Arbaflame is part of the larger Arbaheat group, which comprises various subsidiaries.
It’s a Norwegian technology company that, over the past 10-15 years, has developed and patented a steam process for producing Arbacore, a black water-resistant pellet that can replace coal in existing coal-fired boilers.
In 2015, Arbaflame converted the Thunder Bay Generation Station in Ontario, Canada. Following the conversion, the plant produced 170 MW of energy using 100% renewable fuels instead of coal.

The feasibility study resulted in a turnkey contract and a complete upgrade of the solid fuel facility
The study resulted in a contract for a turnkey project for Arbaflame’s biomass facility, generating 10 MWth, 16 bar steam for the production of black pellets. The turnkey project included a complete upgrade of the existing solid fuel facility for steam production for the new pellet factory.
In an existing building, SiteConcept has constructed an entirely new facility. The furnace that was previously in place was upgraded for increased capacity and improved environmental performance.
SiteConcept’s scope of work has expanded to include activities and deliveries in the pellet factory as well.
In the commitment to Arbaflame, the following components were included::
- Facility design, process dimensioning, and calculations
- Design and construction of process mechanical equipment
- Manufacturing, delivery, and installation of:

- Combustion air system with fans
- Steam boiler 29 bar with two subsequent economizers
- Steam accumulator
- Feedwater system with new pumps
- Process piping system for steam, feedwater, condensate, water treatment, etc.

- Flue gas system with fans
- Ash handling system
- Auxiliary systems such as hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Service plan
- Insluation
- Electrical design and programming in PLC and operator systems.
- Delivery and installation of:

- New/reconstruction of electrical cabinets
- Electrical cabinets
- Control system
- Operator system
- Process safety system
- Instrumentation for pressure, temperature, level, and flow
- Programming of the overall process function
- FAT, SAT and Commissioning
- Documentation and CE markings
Delivery during the summer of 2020
Contract signed in November 2019 with delivery and installation during the summer of 2020. Steam delivery in autumn 2020.
